Giving Australians a Fair Go at the Checkout

Giving Australians a Fair Go at the Checkout

Giving Australians a Fair Go at the Checkout

Families are feeling the squeeze, from groceries and rent to energy bills and fuel prices. And while everyday hardworking Australians are making tough choices to get by, corporate profits are soaring, and Canberra politicians keep playing the same old games.

Enough is enough. It’s time for leadership that actually puts people first.

Tina Brown’s Plan – Fairness, Competition, Accountability: Tina's plan has a bold plan to tackle supermarket price gouging and restore a fair go at the checkout. This is how she will do it:

  1. Mandatory Supermarket Code of Conduct – Turn the current voluntary code into a mandatory, enforceable code for all major supermarkets. This will require good-faith dealings with suppliers and honest pricing practices, with strong penalties if the rules are broken.

  2. Divestiture Powers to Break Up Monopolies – Give the ACCC the power to seek the break-up of Coles or Woolworths (forced sale of stores or assets) if they repeatedly misuse their market power. This “last resort” measure will massively boost competition by ensuring no company can hold consumers hostage.

  3. Independent Supermarket Commissioner – Establish a new watchdog to police the grocery sector. This Commissioner will enforce the code, investigate complaints from suppliers, and monitor prices to expose any price gouging. An independent umpire means the big chains will finally be held accountable for doing the right thing.

  4. Tougher Penalties for Price Gouging and Unfair Practices – Introduce hefty fines (millions of dollars) for supermarkets that rip off consumers or suppliers. Make egregious price gouging illegal, so that exploiting Aussie families is met with real consequences – no more slaps on the wrist.

  5. Transparency Measures – Shine a light on pricing. Implement a public grocery price tracker so everyone can see when and where prices are rising. Require clearer unit pricing and genuine specials (no fake discounts). The new watchdog can “name and shame” companies that overcharge. Transparency empowers shoppers and honest businesses, and it pressures the bad actors to change or face public backlash.

Impact for Berowra and Australia:

  • Lower Grocery Costs: More competition and oversight will mean fairer prices. Families could save hundreds a year on their grocery bills when supermarkets can’t secretly inflate margins. This directly eases cost-of-living pressure on households.

  • Fair Go for Farmers & Small Businesses: A mandatory code and commissioner will ensure farmers and suppliers get fair treatment – no bullying, no below-cost payments. Local small businesses can compete on a level playing field, and new players can enter the market, which means more local jobs and options.

  • Greater Accountability: Coles and Woolworths will finally answer to an independent authority. If they do the wrong thing, they’ll face fines or worse. This policy holds big corporations to account, just as we expect from any citizen – no special treatment for the powerful.

  • Community Benefit, Berowra's Values: Tina’s plan is about fairness and integrity – key values for our community. It puts people before corporate profits and ensures the economy works for everyone, not just a few big companies. It’s a solution-driven approach from an independent who listens to the community.

Why Tina Brown? As an independent voice for Berowra, Tina isn’t beholden to the big parties or donors - she will fight unequivocally for consumers and small businesses. Tina has listened to residents worried about their grocery bills and is taking action.

A vote for Tina Brown is a vote to end supermarket price gouging and put money back in your pocket. It’s time to break the duopoly’s grip and make our supermarkets competitive, fair, and accountable.
